Reality check …
Big is not always better when it comes to your business.
Many of us business owners fall into the trap of thinking that big results come from taking big action. Actually, that’s not necessarily true.
Usually, the reverse is true.
Taking small, consistent steps lead to big results.
Doing those big things can feel complicated and stressful. And when things are complicated and stressful, you tend to not want to do them, to procrastinate and look for distractions that can take you away from doing that big thing.
Been there, done that … many times.
Instead, look at the small, consistent steps you can take to achieve the result you desire.
Here’s how I took baby steps towards a big, scary goal and the result I achieved.
True story …
When I was young, I played the piano … and at the beginning of the year, my teacher would put the sheet music out in front of me and say, “This is the piece you’re going to play for the recital at the end of the year.”
I’d look at the music and think to myself, “There is no way. The notes look complicated, and there are too many of them!”
I’d get more than a little nervous about the whole thing.
However, I’d practice every night, and I’d take it bar by bar, note by note, and chunk by chunk.
I’d play the right hand alone, the left hand alone, and then I’d put them together.
And the next thing I knew, I could play the piece … not very well at first, but the more I practiced and the more consistent I was, the better I performed.
At the year-end recital, there I was playing the music that I thought I would never be able to play at the beginning of the year.
The same is true for you when you’re looking at that big thing you want to achieve.
When you look at the big thing, it likely feels scary and unachievable.
Break it down into small baby steps and ask yourself this question…
“What is the next thing I must do to move this forward?”
The smaller that next step is, the better it is for you because you’ll actually take it.
I invite you to take that next small step and then another and another.
And before you know it, you’ll be playing beautiful music!
