I’ve been having many conversations with people who are having frustrations and challenges with working from home.

On the one hand, there are those who are used to being in an office building and are finding it quite a challenge to be working in a home environment. Then there are others who are used to working from home; however, now they have noise and interruptions around them … and they’re finding that to be a challenge for getting their work done.

You may fall into one of these two categories.

Whichever situation you’re in, the result is the same … it’s frustrating, it’s challenging, and it’s really hard to keep your focus.

If you’re working from home and finding it a challenge, then you’re in good company.

I’ve got a few ways to help you create a productive workspace that helps you get your focused work accomplished.

Create a Physical Perimeter

Create a partition around the area you’re working in. Think of it as a barrier between you and all those distractions that tug at your attention.

Ideally, if there’s a room with walls and a door, that’s the best situation. However, not all of us have that setup. Look for a private location where you may be able to put up some type of barrier, like a curtain.

One of my clients moved her office into the upstairs bathroom because that was the only room with the door. It was a private, quiet space where she could have client conversations.

Get creative, but definitely try to put up some sort of physical partition around you.

Make it Comfortable and Ergonomic

Create a comfortable environment. You might have your computer screen placed in such a way that you have to tilt your head up or down. Make sure your computer screen is at eye level and doesn’t require you tilting your neck. You can use books or boxes to lift your laptop or your computer monitor up to eye level.

Make sure your arms are supported. I have armrests on my chair so I can support my arms and it doesn’t strain my shoulders.

Ideally, have your legs at a 90-degree bend. Again, use a box or books if you can’t reach the floor comfortably.

If you don’t have a proper office chair, then just use a kitchen or dining room chair and use a pillow tucked behind you to support your back.

Adjust the Lighting

Light is so important in your workspace. You don’t want the glare of an overhead light. Turn off overhead lights and if possible have a desk light or a floor lamp next to you to prevent eye strain.

Your computer monitor beams out light at your face. If the brightness is too high, turn it down so it’s a comfortable backdrop to what you’re working on.

Setting up your productive workspace comes down to ensuring you have an environment where you can do your best work, do your focused work, and banish distractions as much as possible.

It’s also important to be comfortable while you’re working so you’re not being also distracted by a stiff back caused by tilting your neck or eye strain due to poor lighting.

Find a room that has some privacy or a barrier, make sure you’re set up in an ergonomic and comfortable way, and have a light that serves as a backdrop.   Doing these three simple things, and using homemade remedies to get it done, will help you set up a productive workspace and allow you to get your work done more effectively.
